Production
Our factory, located in Southern California, has manufactured high quality, hand-made furniture since 1940. We employee an experienced team of skilled craftsmen, most of whom have been with us for over 15 years. We build with only the highest quality materials and construction, using time-tested methods that we’ve enhanced to work with our modern furniture designs.
We start each piece of furniture with 5/4” kiln-dried solid hardwood frames. We secure each joint with two dowels and apply high-strength adhesive. We add supporting corner-blocks to all high-stress joints. Our springs are high-gauge recycled steel. Our foam fills are 50% denser than standard furniture foam. Is this overkill? Maybe, but to us, this is the way to build gorgeous furniture that lasts for years. Our pieces are not only beautifully designed on the outside, they are built to impeccable standards on the inside.
Production time generally runs between 6 and 8 weeks for standard and customized orders. Large orders can be produced without restrictions on quantity. Delivery times for large orders will vary depending upon the amount ordered.
Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing
We understand that environmentally conscious manufacturing is more than just using the right materials. It begins with an awareness of our impact on the environment. We realize that how we treat the environment affects the welfare of our business as well as that of the planet.
When considering environmentally conscious products, each customer has different priorities. Generally, most customers are consider the following issues:
- Sustainability of materials and overall impact on the environment
- Health and wellness
- Cost
VIOSKI offers three manufacturing methods that address each of these considerations in different ways.
Standard Production – Our standard production method uses Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) certified alder, water-based adhesives, and recycled steel springs. However, standard polyurethane foam is used in these products as it is still the most cost-effective padding material available today. Standard pillow fills include down & feathers, kapok, and a “faux” down polyester fiber. Batting is either polyester or cotton. This is our most commonly used and most cost-effective production method.
Eco-Friendly – For this option we start with SFI certified alder, water-based adhesives, and recycled steel springs, as we do with our standard furniture. For padding, we use soybean-based polyurethane foam that reduces the petro-chemical content by approximately 30%. We use either down & feathers or kapok for back and arm pillows. Kapok, sustainably harvested in the rainforest, is a fiber extracted from the seedpod of the kapok tree and provides the touch and comfort of down. Kapok pillows are lighter than cotton, soft, and yet supportive.
For the Eco-Friendly option, we recommend an un-dyed or vegetable dyed organic wool or organic cotton fabric. We also have 100% recycled polyester upholstery fabrics. The Eco-Friendly option costs approximately 30-40% more than the standard option.
Fully Organic – This is our purest, most environmentally friendly and most health conscious option. All components are made from renewable natural resources or from recycled materials. We use recycled steel springs and water-based adhesives. For the frame, we use Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified poplar hardwood. The FSC has the most stringent guidelines for ensuring all timber is cut from sustainable forests, and the council is audited by independent third parties on a regular basis. We use natural finishes and stains for woods which emit no Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) gases. We use natural latex rubber foam in this fully organic option. Natural latex is a milky fluid extracted from the tropical rubber tree in a method that is similar to tapping a maple tree for syrup. We use organic wool batting for the sofa body, and kapok fill for pillows.
For the Fully Organic option, we recommend an un-dyed or vegetable dyed organic wool or organic cotton fabric. The Fully Organic option is generally about twice the price of the standard option.
